Happy Birthday, Grandpa

Remembering my talented, handsome grandpa today on his birthday. My favorite memory of him is playing hymns at the piano. Sometimes I played along on my violin. Sometimes I just sat nearby and listened.

PS. If anyone has a copy of the essay/list he wrote, which Grandma found in his organ bench after his death, about the most important things in life (God, family, leisure...) I would LOVE to add it to the archive.

I got a Flickr message, last night, from a fellow descendent of Jacob and Agnes Smith, living in South Africa. Ali Lauren Jacobs is the great-granddaughter of Jennie (Smith) Hine's sister Tena (Smith) Voss. Specifically, Ali's mother is Darlene Voss, daughter of Cornelius John Voss (Tena and Garnet Voss' son). So, this makes her my third cousin, I believe. Not sure if I have enough caffeine in me, right now, to get that right :)

Jennie is in the top row, second from the left. Tena is at the far right.

Ali has been researching the Smith arm of our mutual family tree, and stumbled on my Flickr album, with photos she recognized (including the one above). She is planning a trip to The Netherlands, in October, to do a "walking pilgrimage" of the places where her ancestors came from, including Jacob and Agnes. I pointed her toward the Jennie Smith and Ancestors posts, on this blog, specifically the newish finds regarding Jacob and Agnes' lineage, in Groningen.

I'm looking forward to sharing what Ali finds, this fall. And I can't wait to make my own journey to the birthplaces of our Dutch ancestors. This research is rewarding in and of itself, but it's a special treat when a "lost" relative finds it. (A couple months ago, I got an email from a Barbara Swanson Richards, the daughter of Don Sutsh's sister, Irma, who passed away when Barbara was an infant, effectively cutting ties between her and the Sutsh family, until now.)

I've been trying to match the faces in these two photos, taken several decades apart. As discussed in this post, the woman in the top photo, seated, second from the right, is the mother (Maartje VanVuuren), and is not present in the bottom photo.

Below is my best guess in matching the faces, which would make the sister on the far left Anna, who died at age 19.

Grandma VanVuuren and her six children

I believe "Grandma VanVuuren" would have to be Maartje (DeJong) VanVuuren, mother of Tryntje (Kate), and grandmother of Richard Hine Sr. She's second from the right, sitting in the bottom row.

Maartje gave birth to seven daughters and three sons. One son, Jacob, died in infancy. Jacob #2 died date unknown. Roel (who I believe is the man in the picture) lived 1862-1945. All seven of her daughters (Grietje, Gertrude, Geertje, Tryntje, Maggeltje, Guurtje, and Anna) survived until adulthood, although Anna died at age 19, in the year 1900. It would make sense that this photo depicts five of Maartje's six surviving daughters, and her son Roel.

I'm going to guess the photo was taken between 1900 and 1911, between the deaths of young Anna and her mother Maartje. One could narrow it down further, to between 1906 and 1911, by assuming Grandpa (Dirk) VanVuuren would have been in the photo, were he still alive.

After comparing the faces with this photo of Tryntje (Kate) and Albert Heun, I believe Kate is in the top row, on the left. Maartje is in the bottom row, second from the right.

Gertrude, I'm guessing, is in the top row, on the right, based on her resemblance to "Aunt Gertrude" in this photo.

Jennie (Smith) Hine's Bible Study Group Photos

This was found in a box of Hazel Hine's snapshots. The date "Aug 25-20" was written on the back of the photo. It measures 3.5" x 4.5". The woman at the bottom right looks Jennie Hine. I'm guessing this is a women's bible group portrait.

The handwriting on the back of this photo reads "Ladies Adult Bible Class taken June 18-1936." There's a circular date stamp on the back that reads "Madson Print, Chicago Jul 23 1936" I believe that's Jennie in the bottom row, 2nd from the right.

This was also found with Hazel's things. There was no writing on the back of the photo, but it was printed as a post card, with an area designated for a stamp, address, etc. It measures about 3.25" x 5.5". I believe Jennie is in the center of the back row, wearing a gray coat.

Another one of Hazel's group photos from this era. There was no writing on the back. It measures 2.75" x 4.5". The woman fourth from the right in the bottom row, wearing a hat, looks like it could be Jennie, but I can't tell.

Elizabeth and Annabel went on a genealogical mission into Chicago, Wednesday. We visited the South Suburban Genealogical and Historical Society, in Hazel Crest IL, a veritable jackpot of resources, including:

A photocopy of the Simon Dekker "History of Roseland and vicinity" (rare)
An extensive index of Cook County cemeteries
Several handmade books about the DeJong family
Where the Trails Cross (some issues mention our family)

We also met a (very distant) cousin, Laurie Coolidge (above) who was very knowledgable and helpful in our search. I can't wait to come back and spend more time at the library!

Hine Gravesites, Oak Hill Cemetery, Chicago

Our cemetery search was not as fruitful as I had hoped. After searching the indexes at SSGHS, I began to doubt whether my previous research was accurate. Also, we learned from a SSGHS librarian that some of the old cemeteries have been moved and merged with newer cemeteries, to make way for development. On top of that, many of the older stones are so worn and damaged, that they're illegible.

We did, however (thanks to Grandma Hazel's records) find Richard and Jennie's grave, and were pleasantly surprised to see Jennie's parents, Jacob and Agnes (Alberda) Smith, next to it. Also, John and Etta (Richard's brother and Jennie's sister, who were also married) were nearby.

This photo was taken in December, 2008, in Geneva NY. We were celebrating Amanda's graduation from chiropractic school. Amanda (Meyers) is Glenn and Norma's granddaughter, and Laurie's daughter.

Could this be Albert Heun's parents?

So far, the earliest record we have of Albert Hine/Heun's lineage is an 1880 US Census listing him (at age 18) living in Roseland with his parents, John and Nellie, two older brothers, Peter and Fredrick, and a younger sister, Katie. The form says the entire family was born in Holland. Therefore, they must have immigrated sometime between 1864 (when Katie was born) and 1880.

One challenge to finding records of them in The Netherlands, is knowing what the Dutch versions of their names were. If anyone knows of a Website that lists Dutch names and their English translations, please let me know!

That said, on the Genlias Website, I found a Jan Heun born the same year as our John Hine, in Groningen. His parents' names were Pieter and Trijntje, which is promising, since our 1880 census shows John's first-born son was Peter, and daughter Katie (Americanized form of Trijntje.) The naming of first-born sons and daughters after the paternal grandparents was a common custom.

I'm further convinced these might be our Heuns by the fact that the very same Jan Heun married a Pieterke (apparently the Dutch form of Nellie) in 1853 (about three years before Peter Hine was born.)

Agnes Alberda: found!

I have finally discovered Agnes Alberda's Dutch roots! Thanks to Glenn's recollection of his mother mentioning Groningen (Netherlands) as the birthplace of her parents, I was able to find an birth record on the Genlias database, which provided the names of her parents. That led me to an extensive family tree for the descendants of Jan Feikes (born c. 1700,) Agnes' great-great-great grandfather.

Dirk Van Vuuren

I've run into some discrepancies in my research regarding Dirk Van Vuuren's immigration date and origin.

Dirk was the son of Roel VanVuuren and Grietje Baardwijck VanVuuren. According to "The VanVuuren Clan," a booklet transcribed by Elizabeth Hine Walker, the family immigrated from The Netherlands to Low Prairie in 1848, when Dirk was 14 years old. However, according to the 1900 census, Dirk immigrated in 1849.

The booklet reports the family immigrated from a place called Uithuistermeede, which doesn't appear on today's maps. According to a Google Book written in Dutch, Uithuistermeede seems to be associated with Onderdendam, a town in Groningen. The VanVuuren booklet also reports that Dirk was born in South Holland, which is nearly 200 miles away (a long way in the 1800s.) My best guess is that the family lived in South Holland, but traveled to Groningen, either by land or sea, to catch the boat to America.

Van Vuuren 50th Wedding Anniversary

In this photo Grandmother VanVuuren, Ann Norris (?), Grandfather VanVuuren, Aunt Gertrude VanErden (that is the order in which the names were written on the back of the photograph; I'm assuming they read from right to left) are preparing for Dirk & Maartje VanVuuren's 50th wedding anniversary.

Maartje DeYoung VanVuuren (born April 25, 1835, died 1 August 1911) married
Dirk VanVuuren (born 12 September 1834, died 21 February 1906) on 3 December 1854. Their 50th wedding anniversary would have been in December 1904.

Maartje was the oldest of Jacob DeJong and Geertje Eenigenberg DeJong's 16 children, nine of which died in childhood, including three on the boat from Schoorl (The Netherlands) in 1949. The family settled in High Prairie (Roseland, Chicago.) They were farmers and co-founders of the Dutch Reform Church in Roseland.

Dirk was the son of Roel VanVuuren and Grietje Baardwijck VanVuuren.

Albert's parents were John & Nellie Heun.

Kate's parents were Maartje DeYoung and Dirk VanVuuren.

Richard Hine, larger than life

I've been playing with a free computer program that allows you print any image on a grid of letter-size paper (up to 20 meters in size!) I love this photo of my great-grandfather at his 45th wedding anniversary in 1960.

When I posted this photo-of-a-photo on Facebook, Janet Hine McNabb commented:

"My Grandpa Hine was a special man, on the quiet side. I remember as a kid wanting to go down to the basement where Grandpa repaired typewriters. I was always told it was cold and dirty down there but I would sneak downstairs anyway so I could sit and watch my Grandpa fix typewritersand just be with him."

Jennie Smith's Mother

In January I worked long and hard to connect Jacob and Agnes Smith to their Dutch origins. On the 1900 Federal Census, the Dutch spelling "Smit" is given. Agnes (ne. Ankje)'s maiden name is a bit of a mystery. She was definitely Agnes Alberda, but I don't know if Alberda was a middle name or maiden name. I also have Van Welde attached to her, from somewhere (possibly writing on the back of one of the old photos) but it doesn't ring a bell with Glenn. He says Kleis sticks in his mind with her. He's not sure where the Smits came from, but he seems to remember his mother mentioning Groningen. The map below shows the Groningen province in yellow. Schoorl (where the DeJongs were from) is marked as well.

History of Groningen

Glenn also remembers hearing that Agnes and Jacob Smith had a child that became ill on the boat and died at Ellis Island (probably a boy.) Apparently Agnes prayed the child would not die before they arrived in the US, because he would be buried at sea. He died immediately after they arrived, so there may be a grave at Ellis Island. Agnes always felt that God was punishing her because all her boys died. The only one that lived was the last one-- Henry John. Previous to him, Henry and John (twins) had died. Peter died on the railroad tracks, and Nick died right after WWI.

Glenn thinks Jennie was born in Onarga, Illinois (that's what it says on his birth certificate,) where the family lived for a short time. The Smits arrived in the US in 1889, the year after they married, and Jennie was born two years later.

"My grandparents moved to Phoenix when I was 3 or 4 and I was very lucky to have them out here. Grandpa Henry died when I was 7 but Gram lived until I was 31. Gram was a saver, I think it was genetic among the Henry women."

I always remember my Grandma and Grandpa's candy jars, on the kitchen counter in their house on Furnessville Road. Grandpa liked lemon drops, so there was a clear glass dish with a lid full of those. I also remember a supply white chalky mint candies, as well as the red and white pinwheel variety. My favorite was the blue glass dish full of assorted caramels. Someone broke the lid, and grandpa made a wooden one that fit perfectly.

"One story about the trip happened in Miami. They had flown from Chicago to Miami and had to change planes. Dad had arranged for a VIP reception and so they were paged over the airport system. Grandma said, 'No one knows us here so we won't answer the page.' Thus, the VIP treatment didn't happen. At some point I may discover those Panama photos and send them to you."

I'm trying to figure out Emma Rhining's timeline. She was born Emma Eugenia Cowan, September 1856, to William Cowan and Nancy Campbell Smith Parrish.

She gave birth to a daughter, Jennie Marie Mott in December 1889. Jennie's father was Sanford Mott.

She gave birth to Effie Josephine Rhining (Henry) 16 October 1893 in Beardstown, IL. Effie's father was Lewis Rhining.

On the 1900 census she's listed as married, but also head-of-household with no husband listed. She had given birth to three children and two were still living (Effie Rhining and Jennie Mott.)There's also a 2-year-old boy named George Cates listed as a boarder.

On the 1910 census Emma is listed as widowed, having birthed four children with two still living.

Was George Cates her child and she didn't want to admit it on the census because she was still married to Lewis Rhining? What became of Lewis Rhining and Sanford Mott? And where did they come from, for that matter? If Cates wasn't her child, who did she become pregnant by, between 1900 and 1910 for her to have gone from having 3 children to 4 children (always with two living-- the two we know, Effie Rhining and Jennie Mott)? Is this Lewis Rhining's son by another woman? If so, was he born before Lewis was married to Emma, after, or at the same time? So much mystery around this woman.

I also noticed she was already 33 when Jennie Mott was born, which seems very late to start having children in those days.

Henry Family Canadian Immigration

In April 1923, the Henry family (Albert and Effie with their three daughters, Bertie, Hazel and Mildred) and Effie's mother Emma Rhining traveled from Beardstown IL to Willow River, British Columbia.

This was one year after the great spring flood of 1922. But it was in direct response to the Great Railroad Strike of 1922 which put Albert Henry out of work.

Here's Hazel's explanation of the adventure, as told by Miranda Hine. Although the family intended to build a life in BC, they returned to Beardstown less than a year later.

Created by the 1st Reformed Church of South Holland IL for their 100th anniversary. Elizabeth Hine Walker copied the information from a copy she found at Hazel's apartment. I'm not sure who has it now.

2. DeJonghe, DeJong, DeYoung and Related Families "Blue Book"
A family genealogy produced in 1956 by Aeneas George DeYoung of Mission KS, privately published by The Vanderbilt Press, operated by Jacob Vanderbilt, another descendant. It was updated and reprinted in the early 1960's. (source)

"South Suburban Genealogical and Historical Society (SSGHS) in Hazel Crest, Illinois has a photocopy. I believe this scan is from the book. Hazel Hine had a copy, which I believe went to Elizabeth.

"It includes a coat of arms that the author attempts to link to the family, as well as some dubious early genealogy of a probably unrelated de Jong family with a supposed tie to the Emperor Charlemagne. It really gets down to business, however, with the 1719 birth of a Pieter de Jonghe. That, and subsequent family milestones in The Netherlands, are documented in the records of the village of Schoorl. The story of the trip, and subsequent events seem to be gathered from anecdotal sources, with some reference to church records.

The largest part of the book is the listing of descendants. It was a pretty thorough job, and includes birth, death and marriage dates for most persons listed. All of the modern information was submitted by family members, so it is not 100% complete and does include errors. Its still a great resource." (source)

The De Jong Name

"Back in the days before Napoleon conquered a good bit of Europe most common persons only had one name. Jan, Dirk, Pieter, etc. The Dutch tradition was for the father to name the first son after his own deceased father, or if granddad was still around, the dead great-grandfather. Something similar was done for daughters and subsequent sons.

Villages were very small and, as everyone knew everyone else, there was no need for further specificity. If there was confusion, some modifier was attached to the name: in our case "de jonghe", which translates as "the younger," was used to denote the younger Tom, Dick or Harry of the family.

When Napoleon came along and wanted to make lists of all of his new subjects for taxing purposes, he decreed that everyone would be given a surname. Couldn't throw the wrong man in prison for tax evasion, after all! When individuals went before the French registrar they had to come up with something to use as a last-name. Some chose a name related to their place of origin or residence (van de Waal--of the Waal river) or their profession (Kuyper--cooper, aka barrel and bucket maker.) Our ancestors must have been an unimaginative lot, as the guys simply adopted the local tag-line used to keep them straight--"the younger".

You can see that every little place could have a John the Younger, Pete the Younger, Hank the Younger, etc., and that none of them would necessarily be related to the other, let alone be related to the Jan de Jonghe, Pieter de Jonghe or Hendrick de Jonghe from the next village down the road. De Jongs sprang up from all over--it may be the most common surname in The Netherlands, akin to Smith or Jones in English.

Soooooooo, if you're doing De Jong research you've really got to be careful. You may think that a listed family is yours because the first names are the same or similar, but that can be nothing more than coincidence. Good documentation from records is essential to verify a connection.

Let's not mention the confusion caused by the De Young thing.

Also, don't let anyone sell you an expensive Coat of Arms for the de Jong family. Most of us spring from just plain folks--only a few of "the youngers" would have been of noble birth and eligible for the honor."

Thanks to Elizabeth (Hine Walker)'s help I found a teeny bit more information about Hazel's father, Albert Henry. In response to my posting a photo scanned by Miranda of Albert Henry and a little girl who was previously believed to be his sister, Elizabeth left the following comment:

"Albert didn't have a younger sister. His mother, Mary Elizabeth Morton, died in childbirth. This is probably the daughter of Dicie and William Ebey. Albert was the fourth child of Hiram and Mary Elizabeth and lived with his mother’s sister Dicie Ebey until he was seven. His father married again and there were two half-brothers.” Dicie and her husband William lived in Cooperstown. They had a five year old daughter when Albert came to live with them. When he was seven, he returned to live with his father and step-mother in Canton."

I don't have any access to Ancestry.com or Heritage Quest right now, but I found a record of Albert Henry on FamilySearch.org (which is basically the same exact info Elizabeth shared, but it's something!)

Summary of the spring floods of 1922, in the Mississippi Drainage Basin.

Owing to the wide distribution of frequent and heavy rains there were floods throughout the entire Mississippi Basin except in the Missouri River and tributaries above Kansas City, Mo., and in the Mississippi River north of St. Paul, Minn. In the upper Mississippi Valley the floods, except that of the Illinois River, while not extremely high, were sufficiently so as to cause much apprehension as well as considerable damage. records were not exceded in the Mississippi River except at Muscatine, Iowa, where the crest stage on April 24 was 19.5 feet, or 1.5 feet above the previous high-water record of April 8,, 1920.

The greatest floods that occurred above Cairo, Ill., were those in the Illinois, White, and Wabash Rivers, especially the Illinois. Over many portions of this river the crest stages were the highest of record, some even exceeding those of the great flood of 1844. The most disastrous overflow occurred at Beardstown, Ill., and vicinity through the breaking of a levee, and about 200.000 acres of cultivated lands were covered. The crest stage on April 20, at this place was 25.1 feet, or 2.6 feet above the previous high water record of June, 1844.

Hazel's memories include the following excerpt about the flood:
"The Illinois River overflowed and much of Beardstown was flooded. Friends who lived at the lower end of the street had to move and were living in a garage. There was water around our house but we could still live there. My dad had our chickens and some of the neighbors’ chickens in a coop set off the ground in a very crowded space. One evening we went across town to visit our neighbors, and my dad invited them to come over for a chicken dinner. My sister, Bertie, said “Yes, they’re all dying anyhow!”"

Gladys Hine Obituary

Gladys E. Hine, 93, joined her husband, Rev. Orville J. Hine, on Sunday, October 4, 2009. She was also predeceased by her first husband, Karl Paul Gustafson. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Maureen Gustafson; daughter, Jean Rosenberg; and son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Janie Gustafson; grandchildren, Daniel, Carrie, Derek and Andrew; great-grandchildren, William and Thia Maria. She was a longtime active member of the Broad Avenue Presbyterian Church. Her community at Good Shepherd Fairview Home was very important to her as she enjoyed her last years there. Prior to that she spent 20 wonderfully peaceful years with Orvil at Hine's Pine's Christmas Tree Farm in Afton, NY. She was spirited and spiritual. She journeys home with the loving support of her family.

A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, October 11, 2009, 1:00 p.m., at the Broad Avenue Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, those wishing kindly consider memorial contributions to the Good Shepherd Fairview Home, 80 Fairview Ave., Binghamton, NY 13904 or a charity of your choice.

Richard Hine Jr. (b. 15 Jan 1924) is the second youngest child of Richard and Jennie Hine. He is a retired minister and lives in Mesa, Arizona.

Richard and his wife Barbara Marie (Tazelaar) Hine celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary 7 Sep 2006. They have 3 children and 8 grandchildren.

(Fun fact: two of Richard's grandsons are Matt and Adam Hine. Richard's late brother Orville also had grandsons Matt and Adam Hine.)

How Hazel and Ken met

Jenni (McNabb Casper) and I were instant messaging about Grandma, and she asked if I knew how Grandma and Grandpa met. I hadn't heard the story, so she told me:

"It was at Wheaton and I think at church on Sunday-- although it could have been at church some other time-- and there was a whole pew of college friends and they started passing notes back and forth about Grandma and Grandpa doubling with two other kids there, and what a great idea it would be...and the rest is history! They all went somewhere that afternoon, I think."

"In college Grandma paid her way for things by working for a lady doing cleaning or taking care of the kids-- two, I think-- Aunt Mill helped pay for her college, too, I think."
